International Wigner Workshop

The International Wigner Workshop is a biennial scientific meeting dedicated to Wigner functions, phase-space methods, and their applications across science and engineering. Established by the Wigner Initiative in 2015, the workshop provides a focused platform for the international and interdisciplinary community working with the Wigner formalism. 

Wigner functions offer a powerful framework for representing and analysing quantum states and dynamical processes in phase space. They provide an intuitive connection between classical and quantum descriptions while retaining essential quantum-mechanical features such as coherence, interference, entanglement, and non-classical behaviour. 

Wigner-based approaches are therefore used in fields ranging from quantum optics and quantum information to nanoelectronics, condensed-matter physics, wave propagation, and quantum transport.

An Interdisciplinary Meeting Place

IWW brings together researchers who approach Wigner functions from different theoretical, computational, and experimental perspectives. The workshop encourages exchange between fundamental research and application-oriented modelling, as well as between communities that may use closely related phase-space concepts in different scientific contexts. 

Contributions may address mathematical foundations, physical interpretation, numerical methods, computational challenges, experimental reconstruction, or applications of Wigner and related quasi-probability distributions. Previous workshops have included research from physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and computational science.

Scientific Exchange and Collaboration

The workshop programme traditionally combines invited presentations with contributed research talks and poster presentations. Its focused format is intended to support detailed scientific discussion, the exchange of methods between disciplines, and the development of new international collaborations. 

IWW also supports the aims of the Wigner Initiative by strengthening connections within the Wigner community, increasing the visibility of current research, and promoting the transfer of knowledge between established researchers, early-career scientists, and neighbouring research fields.

IWW 2029 in Dortmund

IWW 2029 continues this international workshop tradition in Dortmund, Germany. The workshop will provide a forum for presenting recent theoretical, numerical, and experimental developments and for discussing emerging opportunities for phase-space methods in quantum science, nanotechnology, and computational modelling. 

As in previous editions, IWW 2029 is organised in connection with the International Workshop on Computational Nanotechnology (IWCN). The proximity of the two events creates opportunities for exchange between the Wigner community and researchers working on computational nanoelectronics, materials, devices, and quantum transport.
